Enter Macbeth
Therapist: Good evening, your highness! Please take a seat at that bench.
Macbeth: Good evening!
Macbeth looks at the bench, then turns suddenly, as if to make sure no one is following him. He then slowly sits.
Therapist: Alright, what is it, that is bothering you? I heard you were not well last night?
Macbeth: He shook his gory locks at me!
Therapist: Please your highness start from the beginning.
Macbeth: It was our first evening as king and queen. Banquo was missing, I saved a seat for him. But suddenly he sat on my seat...do you hear? My seat! But, oh! (Macbeth closes his eyes) He was full of blood! Blood great Neptune's Ocean could not wash away! I asked who had done this.
Therapist: Alright...and what did the rest say?
Macbeth: They did not seem to mind that there was such a bloody faced man sitting on their new kings seat! No, no but that was not it! Banquo left and came and left and came. He was driving me insane! You do not joke with the king!
Therapist: I see
Macbeth: You do?
Therapist: I do. Now tell me anything else that is on your mind.
Macbeth seems to be in another world, he gets up and stares at the wall. His voice is very quiet
Macbeth: The snake is still in its hide and the scorpions took over my mind. Whats done cannot be undone, oh what did I do? Will I ever see the light again? This is hell! What is death compared to this, oh death might be the best solution. But will I be summoned to heaven or hell? Well either way it certainly cannot get worse.
Therapist: Calm down, death is not the best solution! You are our king! You must not die!
Macbeth: But how long will I stay king? There are so many dangers! It would have been perfect. What to do? Fleance is 'scaped he said! And Banquo gone, but why does he visit me still? He wants to ruin me...take revenge. But I will not let him, no I will not.
Therapist: You mean dead Banquo visits you....to take revenge?
Macbeth: Yes! He knows my black and deep desires, and he wants to destroy me. WHAT TO DO? I do not know! I need to talk to the 3 ladies. They shall guide me and tell me what to do!
Therapist: 3 ladies?
Macbeth: Yes! The witches! They are the ones that told me I shall be king! And they were right, now I am. But am I not unhappier now than before. But why? WHY?
Macbeth starts sobbing. Therapist is confused with what Macbeth said and unsure of a solution
Therapist: I think we had enough today. You did well. We meet again tomorrow! I hope you are better then.
All of a sudden Macbeth stops crying and puts on a strong face
Macbeth: Thank you doctor. I will see my wife now. Everything will be good. I am a man. I am proud. Good day!
This is a sophisticated and intelligent response to the task, and, although your quotations are not coloured, it remains obvious that you are quoting confidently, creatively and frequently, always embedding your quotations smoothly into your prose. This a fantastic script in its own right, and also, at the same time, a highly effective analysis of Macbeth's character. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI wonder, however, why you appear to neglect his relationship with his wife, and her role in it all. Perhaps this would also have benefited from some exploration?
